In April 2013, I was diagnosed with MDS by my doctors at UCONN. The same diagnosis was later confirmed by my (new) doctor at Dana Farber. In order to prepare for and finalize a course of action, I had a bone marrow biopsy on Thursday, June 13. The next day, at my follow up appointment, I was stunned when I was told my diagnosis changed to Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Immediately my medical team in CT and MA created a treatment plan. I was admitted into UCONN/John Dempsey on Tuesday (6/18/13) for an intensive chemotherapy regiment. My hospital stay should be between 3 - 6 weeks. If all goes according to plan, I will have a stem cell transplant at Dana Farber soon thereafter.
Although there is a long, hard road in front of me, I am lucky for the support and love of my husband, the "Great Eight", my 7 amazing grandchildren, extended family and many amazing friends. My family and I appreciate all of your prayers and well wishes. I look forward to returning to my busy schedule, which includes pool school, game day, and book club!
Many have asked how to become a donor. The first step to becoming a bone marrow donor is to join the "Be The Match" registry by submitting a cheek swab. Doctors search the Be The Match Registry to find donors who match their patients. For more information, please visit http://www.marrow.org (Be the Match registry).
Thank you for all the support!
